Twenty-six letters, one direction, no key. The enchanting table language has been a straight substitution cipher since 1991 — the game just borrows it as decoration.

What The Enchanting Table Language Really Is

The floating symbols around a Minecraft enchanting table are not invented for Minecraft, and they are not a secret code for the game. They are the Standard Galactic Alphabet (SGA) — a fictional writing system created by Tom Hall for the 1991 game Commander Keen, where it was used for signage in a comic-book sci-fi world. Notch borrowed it when he built the enchanting table, and it has been part of Minecraft ever since.

Mechanically it is a straight substitution cipher: twenty-six Latin letters, each replaced by one symbol, with no key and no variation. A becomes ᔑ, B becomes ʖ, C becomes ᓵ. Once you know the chart, you can read any enchanting table screenshot in the game — which is exactly what the in-game Enchanting Table book glyphs are: pseudo-text rendered from a single line of random characters and then replaced with the SGA.

This is important because a lot of players assume the symbols encode the enchantment you are about to get. They do not. The swirling text above the table is generated per player and per session and carries no information about the result — the enchantment is decided from the bookshelf count and a random roll, not from the letters. The SGA is atmosphere.

How To Use This Translator

  1. Type English in the box. Any length up to 200 characters.
  2. Press "Enchanting table" to convert. Punctuation and spaces pass through unchanged, and uppercase letters become their lowercase symbol — the alphabet has no capitals.
  3. Copy the result and paste it into a Minecraft sign, a book and quill, a Discord name, a thumbnail, a birthday card.
  4. Press "Read it back" to decode. That direction works on any SGA text you find in a screenshot, including text you did not generate here.

The chart below the tool is the full alphabet in both directions — 26 letters, no variants. If you only need to write one word on a sign, you can copy the symbols straight from the grid without touching the converter.

Why Some Symbols Look Like Punctuation

Because they are. SGA was designed before Unicode existed, and when it was later fitted into Unicode the letters had to be mapped onto characters that already existed — many of them from mathematics, phonetics and technical notation. That is why the alphabet looks like a pile of stray marks:

This is also why the alphabet sometimes breaks on old devices: a few of these characters live in blocks that not every font ships, so a phone without a full Unicode font shows a box □ instead of a symbol. Modern iOS, Android, Windows and macOS all render them; a decade-old e-reader probably will not.

Is It A Cipher For The Game's Enchantments?

No, and this is the single most common misconception. Three facts settle it:

What the language is good for is the thing players actually use it for: writing messages that other players can decode if they know the chart. A sign over a base entrance, a hidden hint in a book, a Discord bio for a survival server. It is a shared in-joke with a real alphabet behind it, which is a rare and pleasing combination.

Where People Use Galactic Alphabet Text

One caution about length: the multi-character letters (O, T, X, Y) mean a short English word can become a long string. In a Minecraft sign, which limits characters, that matters — a five-letter word in SGA can consume a dozen characters of the sign's budget.

Reading It By Hand

If you want to decode without a tool, the chart is genuinely learnable in an afternoon, because several symbols are visual puns on the letter they replace: E is ᒷ (an E rotated), F is ⎓ (an F with its bars extended), G is ⊣ (a G's hook), H is ╎ (a thin H's vertical), I is ⋮ (a dotted I), S is ᓭ (an S shape), W is ∴ (a W's three points), Z is ! (the last letter, the loudest mark).

Learn those eight first and you can read roughly a third of any SGA string on sight, which is enough to guess the rest from context. That is how the cipher is meant to be experienced — not as a secret, but as a script that rewards attention.

How It Got Into Minecraft

The alphabet's route into the game is unusually well documented. Tom Hall drew it in 1991 for Commander Keen IV, where it appeared on signs, machines and billboards as background texture — a way to make a cartoon sci-fi world feel written-in rather than designed. Because the symbols were already a full substitution for the Latin alphabet, they were reusable: an artist could write anything in them without inventing new glyphs.

Notch added the enchanting table in the 1.0 release in 2011, and needed floating text that felt arcane. Rather than commission a new script, he used the Standard Galactic Alphabet — a design that was already, in the industry's memory, "the sci-fi alphabet". The fit was immediate, and for most players today the symbols are the Minecraft enchanting language; the Commander Keen origin is trivia, not context.

Two details from that history explain behaviours you can see in-game. First, the game renders SGA by generating a random Latin string and substituting glyphs, which is why the text looks like words even though it is not: the letter distribution and word lengths come from real English. Second, because the substitution is total, the alphabet has no numbers and no punctuation — so a Minecraft sign "written" in SGA can never contain a number, which is a tell when you look closely at fan art.

The alphabet has also travelled further than either game. Because it is a complete Latin substitution that was never copyrighted as a typeface, it turns up in other indie games, on merchandise, in escape-room kits and in tattoo designs — usually as an unlabelled easter egg for people who played either game as children. That is an unusual afterlife for a piece of 1991 menu art, and it is the reason this translator exists: the symbols are widely recognised, but almost nobody can read them without a chart.

Builds And Puzzles That Use It Well

The alphabet is at its best when it is a gate rather than a decoration. A few patterns that work on servers and in classrooms:

The failure mode is the same in every case: too much text. A single short sentence in SGA is a puzzle. A paragraph is homework. Keep it to a line, and let the reader's recognition do the rest.

FAQs

What is the Minecraft enchanting table language called?

The Standard Galactic Alphabet. It was created by Tom Hall for the 1991 game Commander Keen and later reused by Minecraft for the enchanting table's floating text.

Does the enchanting table text tell you what enchantment you will get?

No. The symbols are random decoration generated per opening. The result depends on bookshelves and your level, not on the letters.

How do I read the enchanting table language?

Use the translator above and press "Read it back", or use the 26-letter chart — it is a straight one-to-one substitution, so each symbol always means the same letter.

Can I use these symbols on a Minecraft sign?

The symbols are not part of Minecraft's sign character set, so you cannot type them in-game without mods. They work in Discord names, social bios, documents and thumbnails, which use normal Unicode text.

Why do some letters show as boxes?

A few SGA characters are unusual Unicode blocks that not every font includes. Modern phones and computers render them; older or minimal systems show a box instead.

Why is O written as !¡?

Because when the alphabet was mapped into Unicode, the closest existing characters were used — and for O that meant an exclamation mark plus an inverted one. The same applies to Y (||) and X (a line plus a slash).

Does the translator handle capital letters?

SGA has no capitals, so uppercase input becomes the lowercase symbol. That is how the game renders it too.

Is it the same as the Minecraft font?

No. The Minecraft font is the typeface used for the game's interface. The enchanting table language is a separate fictional alphabet that happens to appear in the same game.

Can I decode text from a screenshot?

Yes — type or paste the symbols into the result box and press "Read it back". Multi-character letters are matched automatically.

Does the text work on Instagram or TikTok?

Mostly. The common symbols render, but a few can break on older devices, so keep the important line short.

Is this generator free?

Yes — free, no account, no limits. The alphabet itself is a fictional script, not Minecraft-owned artwork.
